Hapa Grill's Roots - Sassy Kassy's Lunchwagon

Hapa Grill opened in July 2005 in the Marketplace at Kapolei. The restaurant’s menu features popular items from owner Shannon Tangonan Putnam’s parents’ Sassy Kassy lunchwagon, a mainstay in Campbell Industrial Park for nearly three decades. Although Richard and Ellen Tangonan retired from their lunchwagon business in 2005, they still help prepare many of the dishes for Hapa Grill that made Sassy Kassy’s well-loved, including teriyaki beef, hamburger steak and mochiko chicken.

Putnam grew up in Ewa Beach and worked on the lunchwagon with her parents — scooping rice and macaroni salad, making sandwiches and cashiering. After graduating from the University of Hawaii she spent 12 years reporting for newspapers in Hawaii and on the Mainland. After stints in Washington, D.C., Louisville, Ky., and San Diego, Putnam decided it was time to return home to her lunchwagon roots.

At the time, her uncle was selling his restaurant, Jurison’s Westside Cafe (now Hapa Grill). Hapa Grill’s diverse menu includes new items created by Hapa’s kitchen staff. Customer favorites include the “I love you like a mango” salad, sizzling pulehu rib eye and fried noodles with teriyaki beef. Fried ice cream and Mom’s brownie sundae are the perfect endings to a meal.

Hapa Grill has earned a reputation for its family atmosphere and friendly service. In October 2008, Hapa Grill expanded by adding a “special event” room that seats up to 50 people. The room has been used for first-birthday parties, baby showers, meetings and more. The restaurant also caters for parties large and small.

Hapa’s is a strong supporter of West Oahu civic groups and community events. Hapa Grill has been a participating restaurant for four years at the Taste at Kapolei, a Kapolei Rotary event that funds scholarships for Leeward-area students. It also provides gift certificates to many schools and organizations for fundraising efforts.

Hapa Grill understands the importance of giving back to the community. Putnam still resides in Ewa Beach with her husband, David, an editor and writer, and their son.
